How to Love Vacationland: Summer Vibes on a Budget

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and it's got you thinking, "What AM I going to do this summer?"
It's an easy question to ponder; our mind doesn't need to spend any money, so it can conjure up images of extravagant vacations – days in foreign countries, expensive flights, and 5-star restaurants, but our dreams might not match our budget. I SHOULD be in France this summer playing tourist, but my wallet doesn't agree (honestly, soooo rude).
If you're in a similar spot, let's get creative together and make the most of the summer vacation vibes but on a budget that won't cause late-night stress sweats.
Just Stay Home. What Is a Staycation?
Is it really a vacation if you don't travel away from home? Why yes, yes, it is. Staycations have grown in popularity as people struggle with economic instability. People usually think of a staycation as lying back on the couch with a bag of chips, rotting your brain with as much streaming junk as you can, and not thinking about what happens when you go back to work or school.
You absolutely CAN do that if you want; no one's stopping you, but if you're taking time off work, shouldn't you do a little exploring? A staycation can be as low-key or action-packed as you want it to be!
WHY Should I Staycay?
Freedom, flexibility, reduced price tag - there are a lot of reasons to have a staycation, but here are a few of my favorites:
- Support the Local Economy: Whether you're exploring your hometown or a nearby destination, spending money locally helps strengthen the community. From dining at neighborhood restaurants to shopping at local small businesses, your staycation dollars support the people who make the area unique.
- Experience the Best of Both Worlds: Enjoy a refreshing change of pace without the high costs of long-distance travel. Unwind and recharge while keeping things convenient and budget friendly.
- See New Sights: You can appreciate the beauty of your own backyard (literally or figuratively) and find new nearby nooks you can frequent in the future!
Living at the Ritz (From Home)
Just because we're staying home doesn't mean we can't live it up. A little human ingenuity, creativity, and smart spending can transform any time off into a cherished memory. Near or a Bit Farther
- Stay In-State: Choose a part of your home state that you've always wanted to explore but haven't had the chance to visit. It could be a charming town, a scenic park, or a hidden gem just a bit too far for a casual day trip.
- Cross the Border: (To another state, that is!) Visit a neighboring state for a few days to explore the area and enjoy everything it offers.
Align Your Itinerary
- Punch Your Ticket: Once you've picked your destination, see if there are any concerts, sporting events, or performances coming up when you visit. Purchasing tickets early to a concert is the best way to secure a great price!
- Feeling Festive: Check to see if the town you're trekking to has any big festivals or other city-sponsored events that you could line up with your vacation. This is an excellent opportunity to see the town at its best and enjoy a lively outing.
Embrace the Outdoors – WE LIVE IN MAINE!
- Happy Campers: You can camp at state or national parks for a very low fee, usually under $50 a night. That's way cheaper than staying at a hotel! You can connect with nature, roast s'mores over the campfire, sleep under the stars, and make unforgettable memories.
- Gone Fishing: There are countless public fishing areas available throughout the 50 states, plus fishable rivers, streams, or ponds managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, or state fish and wildlife agencies. These areas are often accessible for no to minimal fees if you have the proper licenses and comply with local season regulations.
- Take a Hike: If you and your crew love hitting the trails, you can plan your next trip for a destination with multiple treks available. State and national parks offer various public hiking options and even offer guided tours so you can enjoy the trail and forget the timeline.
- By the Water: Instead of the typical beach trip, consider staying near a lake and renting a boat, jet skis, or kayaks. You can usually rent watercraft for a week, day, or even by the hour - and they often include the required safety equipment. These short-term rentals let you experience all the fun of life on the water without all the costs!
