3 Easy Steps to Dispute a Mistake on Your Credit Report

Your credit score is important. Your score will guide lenders as they make a decision on how likely you are to repay your debts. A credit score can also impact the rates that you pay for a loan. There are three different credit bureaus, Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. The data collected by each credit bureau may not be exactly the same, so it is possible for you to have three different credit scores. At least once a year you should be reviewing your credit report. You are allowed one free report every 12 months from each credit bureau: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion.

Don't order the reports directly from the companies. They are providing free credit reports only through annualcreditreport.com, 1-877-322-8228.

If there is a mistake on your credit report, you need to get it corrected. What do you do?

  1. Go directly to the dispute page of the credit bureau with the mistake: EquifaxTransUnion, or Experian.
  2. Create an account on the site.
  3. Once you’ve logged in, follow the guidelines to file a dispute.

It is 100% free to file a dispute and it will take about 30 days to receive a response.
