Penny Phase-Out
12/18/2025
What you can expect as a member
As pennies become harder to get, some organizations may round cash transactions to the nearest nickel. If we change how we handle cash, we’ll let you know in advance.
- Your balances and digital transactions (debit card, ACH, online, and mobile) will still post to the exact cent.
- Any future changes would apply only to cash transactions, like withdrawals and in-person cash payments.
- Any updates will be small, transparent, and focused on treating members fairly.
We're here for your business
If you run a business, every cent counts. The move away from pennies may affect how you price items, staff your cash drawers, and make change. As guidance evolves, we will:
- Share best practices for rounding and cash handling.
- Help you adjust coin orders as pennies become less available
- Support you in keeping checkout simple and positive for your customers.
Visit our Penny Phase-Out page for updates as national guidance becomes clearer and any changes are finalized. If you have questions today, we’re ready to help!
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this change the money in my accounts?
No. Your balances and the value of your money are not affected. The phase-out relates to physical pennies, not the dollars and cents in your accounts.
Will my debit card, online, or mobile payments be rounded?
No. Digital transactions, like debit card purchases, online bill payments, and transfers, will continue to post to the exact cent.
Could my cash transactions be rounded?
As pennies become harder to get, some businesses and financial institutions may choose to round cash transactions to the nearest nickel. If we update how we handle cash, we’ll clearly explain what’s changing and when.
What should I do with the pennies I already have?
You can keep using them in cash transactions or deposit them into your accounts. We’ll continue to accept pennies as long as they remain legal tender and we’re able to process them.
How will I know if Atlantic makes any changes?
We’ll share updates on this page, in our branches, and through our usual communication channels so you have plenty of notice and clear information.
As a business owner, how will the penny phase-out affect me?
You may see fewer pennies available for cash drawers, and you might consider rounding final cash totals to the nearest nickel. Pricing, point-of-sale systems, and written policies may need small tweaks over time.
Will you still provide coins for my business?
We’ll continue to work with you to meet your coin needs as long as supply is available. If penny availability changes, we’ll help you adjust your orders and plan alternatives.
