Atlantic Helps Member Targeted by Fraud
04/22/2026
South Portland, ME - A dark room, fingers clicking away on a keyboard, and a scammer one step closer to accessing money that isn’t theirs. It's an image usually conjured up for sensationalism in a TV show, but it's not too far from the truth. It's important to stay alert and act quickly when a hacker strikes.
For Danny and Polly*, the scammer targeted them through a computer hack. It sounded a false alert, notifying them that they were compromised. Hacks like this prey on people's panic, and this was no different. The virus directed them to a fake Microsoft phone number where the scammer worked to gain their account information.
Realizing their mistake, they immediately visited their nearest Atlantic Branch. Panic, anxiety, and doubt all built in their minds as they worried about losing all their money.
Atlantic was able to help them access their accounts to confirm that no money had been taken. With the help of the Fraud Team, Atlantic was able to block new transactions, update their account numbers, new debit cards, and shared a recommendation on where to get their computer checked for viruses.
They shared. “The staff member who helped us was knowledgeable and compassionate. He treated us with professionalism and respect and was able to assist us in all we need. He is the sweetest man, and his parents should be very proud of him.”
Atlantic will never ask you for your personal information, Digital Banking credentials, debit/credit card numbers, or instruct you on how to respond to fraud alert texts. Remember, when you believe you’ve been targeted for fraud, the best thing to do is to reach out immediately for help. Please stop by any of our branches or call 800-834-0432.
